For their work on Synopsis, Anton Marini and Rahul Somani have been awarded a COSA micro-grant. Synopsis is a collection of open source computational cinematography software that utilizes machine learning to uncover trends and patterns within film and video. These tools can be used to analyze one’s own content to identify shot types, or even compare to other similar shots within the larger dataset. However, a wider topic being tackled by this project is the issue of bias in both cinema and machine learning datasets. Synopsis hosts a crowd-sourced “labeling project” which works to uncover bias within the data, as well as generally improve the tool. With their grant, Marini and Somani continued investigation into the machine learning model training.
